WHAT IS OPTICAL SCAN VOTING?

1. An optical scan ballot is similar to scan tron tests you took in High School and College.  To vote, you will need a black or blue pen.  Completely fill in the oval next to the candidate or issue for whom you are voting, as Spuddy says "Make your mark dark!"

 

WHEN WILL THIS SYSTEM BE IMPLEMENTED?

1. Optical scan voting is scheduled to begin with the 2008 primary election, May 27, 2008!!!

WHY ARE WE CHANGING VOTING SYSTEMS?

1. Our old punch card system of voting no longer has sufficient support for maintenance, parts or materials to conduct a reliable election. 

 

WHAT DOES THE NEW OPTICAL SCAN BALLOT LOOK LIKE?

WHAT ARE THE INSTRUCTIONS FOR OPTICAL SCAN VOTING?

 

HOW ARE THE OPTICAL SCAN BALLOTS COUNTED?

1. Ballots are tabulated by a machine that scans the ballot for darkened ovals and records those marks as votes.

2. Our tabulation process will change significantly for the upcoming primary and general election.  We have purchased six tabulation machines called 650’s.  Previously we had three punch card ballot

   counters.  The punch card ballot counters would count at a rate of  1000-1200 ballots per minute.  The new machines count at a rate of 50-300 ballots per minute.  It will take longer to get results.

HERE IS A MOVIE OF 100 BALLOTS BEING COUNTED ON THE OLD PUNCH CARD MACHINES AND THE NEW 650'S.  YOU CAN SEE HOW LONG EACH OF THESE TAKE!
