Motor Vehicles: Glossary
B
Bill of Sale - must include vehicle description, sales price, buyer's name, original signature of seller, and date.
D
Dealer Purchase - from an Idaho dealer. You must bring in your pink copy of the form 502 out of your rear window.
F
Fees - A sales tax equal to 6% of the purchase price (minus trade-in if purchased from a licensed dealer), or documentation that at least 6% sales tax was paid to the state of purchase or that the vehicle was purchased at least three months prior to moving to Idaho. (The latter exemption does not apply to businesses bringing vehicles to Idaho from a non-taxing state.) A title issued in the applicant's name is sufficient documentation that tax was paid at that state's tax rate.

License Plates, Personalized: Available for vehicles not in excess of 26,000 pounds gross vehicle weight, motorhomes, and motorcycles. Please click here to view what types of plates can be personalized.

Odometer Disclosure Statement - required for any transfer of a motor vehicle less than 10 years old and under 16,000 lbs. G.V.W. Disclosure may be entered on the title if there is space for it. If not, disclosure should be made on a federally approved form.
Out of State - If you are moving to Idaho you must bring vehicle in to DMV for a VIN inspection. If you have no lienholder you must bring your out-of-state title into DMV.

Power of Attorney - authorizes the County Assessor to sign the application for the owner. The Power of Attorney must fully describe the vehicle and be signed by the owner/applicant.

Registering, When: The vehicle must be titled in Idaho before it can be registered. (You can apply for vehicle registration immediately after the titling process has been completed.) If moving to Idaho from another state, your vehicle must be present for a VIN inspection.
Registering, Where: You can register your vehicle(s) at any of Idaho's 44 county assessor offices (click here for locations in Ada County).
Registering, Who: Vehicles requiring registration must belong to an Idaho resident or business.
Registration fee (See chart on following page for approximate fees). Since exact fees may vary, contact the county assessor in the county where the vehicle will be registered for this information.

Title (for used vehicles) - must be properly released by the previous owner and lienholder (if any), or Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin (for new vehicles) - must be properly released by the dealer and assigned to the owner.
Title Application (optional) - Out-of-state dealers, lienholders, and leasing companies may prepare.
Title fee - $8.00
