MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENTS

Last year(2007) there was media attention given to the number of deaths related to motorcycle accidents in Ada County. One very unfortunate incident involved a motorcycle rider that by swerving to avoid an auto - lost control and crashed. This event brought renewed attention to the campaign for stricter motorcycle helmet laws in Idaho. There is merit to both sides of this issue. However we would like to point out that helmets do not prevent accidents, they help prevent injury. Out of the twelve highway (not counting off road motorcycle/ATV) deaths last motorcycle “season”, the common denominator in the majority of the accidents was speed.  In general the accidents break down like this;

      (A) Three involved other vehicles that caused or contributed to the accident.                   

      (B) One was caused by the rider’s inattention.                                                                                       

      (C) One rider lost control after a sudden acceleration.

      (D) Seven were directly related to an unsafe speed on behalf of the motorcycle rider.

      (E) Two of these included blood alcohol levels above the .08 legal limit.                                                                                 

As the operator of the motorcycle, you can help prevent accidents such as these. Always assume the other vehicles cannot see you and be prepared to react.  Always pay attention to what you are doing and your surroundings. Always ride within your limits and maintain control. Never drink and ride. And please, Idaho is a beautiful state, slow down, enjoy the scenery, enjoy the ride. This season - let’s ride safe.
