Valley Loop Study

On December 15, 1912 the tracks of the Boise Valley Railway (extending from Boise to Nampa along Ustick & Franklin) were extended to connect with those of the Boise & Interurban Railway (extending from Boise to Caldwell along State Street).  The merged companies became the Idaho Traction Company, and the completed route was known commonly as the Boise Valley Loop.

 

The Council is undertaking this project to determine how best to preserve and/or interpret the many historical sites and events within this significant transportation corridor.  Among the projects being considered as part of this study are:

• An inventory of the historic sites/districts along the historic route of the Valley Loop.
• A history of the major transportation networks that overlapped and/or crossed the Valley Loop route.
• The feasibility of pursuing a state historic byway designation for this route.
• Encouraging the creation of urban design standards for the Valley Loop corridor to reinforce the historic use of this significant transportation corridor.
• Educating the general public of the historic significance of the route.
• Celebrating the Loop's centennial in 2012.  

As part of this effort, the Council will investigate what funding opportunities exist that might make it possible to implement all or parts of the results of this study.

The project is being led by Council member Brian Tandrow.
