West Nile Virus

West Nile Virus is a viral disease that affects primarily birds. This disease, unfortunately, can be transmitted from infected birds to people, through the bite of mosquitoes. In about 1 out of every 150 instances that a person is infected with West Nile Virus, they will become seriously ill.
Horses are very suseptible to West Nile Virus infections, and in about one third of the cases, it is fatal to them.
While only a small percentage of the people who are infected with West Nile virus will become seriously ill, steps must be taken so that human health is protected. One way to limit the spread of this disease, is to control the number of mosquitoes in populated areas. To this end, Ada County Mosquito Abatement District treats both larval and adult mosquitoes.
