Become a Volunteer

What does a volunteer do?

  • Monitors quality of support, safety and services provided to the ward (the volunteer is NOT the care provider; however they ensure the ward is receiving the proper care)
  • Provides medical consents on behalf of the ward.  This could include changing a prescription or authorizing a necessary surgery
  • Manages the ward’s limited finances
  • Visits the ward on a regular basis (this helps the volunteer see what condition the ward is in and better determine whether or not the ward needs more or less assistance)
  • Provides quarterly reports to the Board
  • Ensures the ward is getting all the benefits to which he/she is entitled
  • Acts as an outlet to the ward for any questions he/she may need assistance in understanding

 

Qualifications of a Volunteer Guardian: the Board of Community of Guardian is looking for a volunteer with these qualities

  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing, making written reports to the volunteer coordinator, and to other persons as necessary
  • Ability to work with professionals using tact, concern and basic human relations
  • Compassionate

 

Requirements of a Volunteer Guardian:

  • Attend an initial interview and training (which will outline in great detail all duties of the volunteer guardian and give necessary materials for a successful guardianship)
  • Maintain a strict level of confidentiality regarding ward’s personal business
  • Attend continuing education trainings annually
  • Keep volunteer coordinator informed of all activities regarding ward
  • Maintain up to date and accurate paperwork
  • Return case file to office upon withdrawal or closure of guardianship
  • Ability to pass a background check
  • No felony convictions
  • A person who abuses alcohol or drugs cannot become a volunteer guardian
  • A person who has been convicted of any crime of a sexual nature cannot become volunteer guardian
