Testing Process

Ada County Paramedics conducts Paramedic and EMT employment testing as staffing needs dictate. You might not be allowed to participate in any portion of the testing process for which you arrive late, so please be punctual. All scores and pass/fail recommendations made by Ada County Paramedics evaluators and supervisory staff are final—there is no grievance process. Candidates who are not offered employment may re-test when an examination event is scheduled by Ada County Paramedics and no sooner than three months following the candidate's last test.

The written examination evaluates certification-appropriate knowledge and diagnostic decision-making. It is 100 multiple-choice questions for EMTs and 200 multiple-choice questions for Paramedics. Questions address many aspects of pre-hospital emergency care. Candidates are given two hours to complete the exam. Your written exam score is half of your final cumulative score. War Veterans will have five points added to their raw test score (not percentage). Qualified Disabled War Veterans will have ten points added to their raw score.

Sample Paramedic exam

The physical agility test evaluates strength, flexibility, and endurance. The physical agility test is comprised of four pass/fail stations.

Agility station descriptions

Practical skill stations evaluate Paramedic candidates' critical thinking and scene management skills. Stations may include a mega-code, ECG rhythm interpretation, a medical scenario, and a trauma scenario. Your average practical stations score is half of your final cumulative test score.

An interview is conducted so that we can get to know more about you and you can get to know more about our organization.

If you are coming from another State be sure to check with Idaho State EMS to make sure you have the necessary credentials to work in the State of Idaho.  State EMS phone number is 208-334-4000.

State EMS Application Form cost to process form is $35.00.  Assessment testing $110.00

Title 67, Chapter 30 of the Idaho Code requires all EMS personnel to undergo a criminal history check, including fingerprinting. Candidates who successfully complete the written exam, physical agility test, and practical stations will be contacted within two weeks of test completion to schedule an interview and begin the criminal history investigation process. Candidates pay background check and related fees, which are approximately $45.  Ada County Paramedics Employer ID:  1680

Please contact the Idaho Dept. of Health and Welfare's Criminal History Unit to begin the investigative process before your interview. Call (208) 442-8353 or (800) 340-1246, or visit https://www.chu.dhw.idaho.gov/.

Attire

Activity-appropriate attire is recommended throughout the testing and evaluation process. Candidates are expected to dress comfortably in business-casual clothing for the written and practical exams. Gym attire is required for the physical agility portion and, as you might expect, business attire is recommended for interviews.
